London Calling: My Days as a Traffic Marshal at the Excel Exhibition Center
Ah, London! The large and busy city with its iconic sights and endless energy. But for me, Syed Ali Zulqurnain, London wasn't just about Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. It was also good experiences I gained as a student there, and one of those experiences was being a traffic marshal at the Excel Exhibition Center.
The Excel Exhibition Center – a large venue hosting all sorts of events. One of my friends worked there as a traffic marshal. I went to visit him, and we were happy to see each other. My friend asked would you like to join me in working at Excel as a traffic marshal.I said yes. He then called the admin office and spoke with Mr. Richard, telling him that his friend Syed Ali is available for a job. Mr. Richard called me into the office, so my friend Irfan Iqbal Butt and I went there. They provided me with a uniform and steel-toe shoes for safety, and I joined Excel as a traffic marshal. As a traffic marshal, I wasn't exactly directing traffic, but I played an important role in keeping things running smoothly. My job was to ensure the flow of vehicles from cars to lorries navigating the various ramps and parkig areas around the center./p>
Early mornings and Teamwork
We started bright and early at 05:30 AM. We'd gather at the traffic marshal cabin, grab our high-vis vests, and asked the traffic Supervisors regarding today me job area then he explain us the location and job direction. Whether it was the East Ramp, West Ramp near the iconic Sunborn hotel ship, the South Lorry Ways, or the North Lorry Ways, each zone had its own unique set of challenges.
I remember some of my fallows durring workig there, group including Lal Muhammad, Said Jama, Zaman Sheruz, Khan Amir, Chewdhury Mamun, Munthall Gabriel, Salim Blwlyan, Don Attfeld, and myself, worked together. We covered each other's duties during our 15-minute tea breaks at 9:00 AM and lunch breaks at 1:00 PM.
Supervisors
We weren't alone in this operation. We had a team of supervisors who explain us and ensured everything ran normal and smoothly.I also remember few Superviosrs name like, Dave Warne, Iqbal Hussain, Andre Mackintosh, David Crooks, Dave Barbar, and Peter Hearn were always there to answer our questions and provide support.
More Than Just a Job
Being a traffic marshal at the Excel Exhibition Center was more than just a job. It was an experience that taught me valuable lessons about responsibility, teamwork, and adapting to different environments. It allowed me to meet new people, from fellow marshals to supervisors, and gain a deeper understanding of the fast-paced world of event management.
Looking back, my time at the Excel Exhibition Center was a unique chapter in my London adventure. It wasn't job, but it was a rewarding experience that instilled in me a sense of accomplishment and a newfound appreciation for the dedication it takes to keep a large-scale operation running smoothly.
